August 8, 2025

Many thanks to the 50-some of you who took the time to come to my 64th birthday party (and Bishop Sending). It meant a lot.

My birthday, August 2, was the last day of Churchwide Assembly in Phoenix, followed by a grueling day of travel that got me home at 3 AM. So this was a lot more fun.

You who were there must really have wanted to be there. you had to endure quite the drive due to a car fire on I 45.

With all the stories and the video, I almost feel like I attended my own eulogy! I have always marveled at the lovely things people say at funerals, and to think that we miss the chance to hear our own eulogies, by only a few days.

One of the things that gives me incredible comfort is knowing that the synod is in such good hands with Bishop-elect Tracey Breashears Schultz and Vice President Kathy Patrick.

So thank you for the kind words, the margaritas, the fajitas, the memories, and for coming all the way from Houston, Brenham, Waco, The Woodlands, Missouri City, Kingwood, and all the farthest parts. Oh, and for singing “When I’m 64.”
