Leviticus was quoted to me several times this year. Here are is a passage from Leviticus that has not been quoted to me.

Leviticus 25:35 – 38

If any of your kin fall into difficulty and become dependent on you, you shall support them; they shall live with you as though resident aliens.36Do not take interest in advance or otherwise make a profit from them, but fear your God; let them live with you. 37You shall not lend them your money at interest taken in advance, or provide them food at a profit. 38I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan, to be your God.

What strikes me here is not only that we should support our family (or fellow-citizen) if they become dependent, but the passage also assumes, rather matter-of-factly, that we would do the same thing with resident aliens. Support your family just as if they were resident aliens. Treat your family just as if they were resident aliens. Support them if they are struggling. Do not charge interest. Do not make a profit from them. This is the humane and biblical thing to do.
