Light of Christ is a unique new place. I located on Galveston Bay, a little bit north of Galveston Island, La Porte is a port city that has been pummeled by hurricanes and the economy. It’s a small congregation with a large footprint. The food pantry feeds hundreds a day. On Saturday they gave food to 144 people representing 390 family members. Also remarkable, a significant portion of the congregation are in recovery. They host three AA meetings a week.

Pastor Gary Morgan-Gohlke has served this congregation for 14 years. This weekend was the 30th anniversary of his ordination, September 5, 1993.

Gary is bivocational. When his call ended at Memorial Drive Lutheran Church in Houston, Gary and Carol lived on a sailboat for a couple of years before returning to Houston. He began working at Light of Christ and at the same time started GMG Marine, servicing boats and yachts.

Gary’s mother from San Antonio and other family members came today to celebrate his 30th anniversary of ordination.

Driving around a port city, the cranes tower over the trees and homes like Imperial Walkers from Star Wars.

Due to flooding from recent hurricanes, deed restrictions now require new homes to be built up.
