Today we remember Jesus, Mary and Joseph fleeing persecution of Herod in Egypt. Thank goodness they were not turned back at the border, or thrown in a detention center and subsequently deported.

Receiving refugees across national borders is a moral imperative. Throughout history people have fled political persecution, hunger and disease. Reciting them is a moral imperative.

Crossing a border is not a crime. Armed robbery is a crime. Embezzlement is a crime. Murder is a crime. Criminals should be punished. Criminalizing immigrants is criminal.
