I spent this Palm Sunday in Pearland, at the invitation of New Life Lutheran Church. New Life is in its seventh year, a merger between King of Glory and St. Stephen’s in 2005. New Life is embarking on a second run at reaching out to the growing Latino community.
What struck me at the early service were the bright faces and warm handshakes. It was like the whole congregation was in a good mood. At 8 a.m. Should someone be grumpy? This must be a reflection of Pastor Brian Gigee’s eternally upbeat attitude. He was in good spirits even after the defeat of OSU by they who must not be named.
Between services we watched a puppet show thanks to a traveling group from New Hope Lutheran Church in Keller, Texas. Afterwards we had informal conversation in the fellowship hall.
At the second service I was struck by the number of young families. Lots and lots of young families bearing baby carriers and palm fronds. New Life has 25 going to the ELCA Youth Gathering this summer in New Orleans. Kudos to youth worker Beth Hartfiel, AIM (Associate in Ministry). This young congregation sang well during communion, and responded thoughtfully and enthusiastically to this bishop’s foolish message on recapturing the humble, servant spirit of the church.
Blessings on your ministry New Life.
I arrived in a collar, but when I arrived, casual Brian graciously gave me this scarlet “Palm Sunday” Cubavera shirt to wear. Thx Brian.
