Medicaid does not pay for abortions in Texas. It will pay for contraceptives and cancer screenings. Some of the places that provide those services also do abortions. Now, due to Governor Perry’s new law, Texas won’t allow Medicaid to go to these places, so Medicaid will no longer be available in Texas. One huge step backwards for poor women and children in Texas.
Let’s watch what happens. I suspect the number of abortions will rise in Texas, as well as the amount spent on treating cancer, which will not be caught early enough since the poor will not be able to afford screenings.
This is a loss for the poor and those who advocate for the poor. For those of us who want more health care for the poor, and fewer abortions, it’s tragically ironic that some abortion opponents’ policies actually increase abortions. Contraceptives = less unintended pregnancies = less abortions.

I agree this is a very serious problem, but we all know that since the Sexual Revolution and the massive use of contraception, abortions have sky-rocketed. We need to find a solution. I believe the solution has to do with knowledge and true spirituality….

Planned Parenthood makes no indication whatsoever that this decision was entirely of the Obama administration.

Segments of the public hiring lobbyists putting pressure on lawmakers made that decision. It is the same people most likely saying we are a Christian nation. Faith is manifested in works out of love for Christ and if we are a Christian nation as espoused then we would not be cutting programs of the poor. We would up our humanitarian aid domestically and globally up to 10% to honor that we were blessed with. On top of that unwanted children which I taught versus having abortion. I will support the lesser of the evil which to me is abortion. There is nothing worse in this world than an unwanted child and they know it. As far as contraception well the population that needs it –teenage girls have a difficult time getting it. We would rather strap them with a 20 year sentence of raising a kid before they are ready and punish them endlessly financially and socially than do the kinder thing which is prevent them from getting pregnant in the first place. This same people so hot on making it difficult to get contraception are the same people who will not provide support or find ways to insure child support from the male. If you are going to prevent contraception being readily available to the population that needs at least be Christian enough to provide the social and financial government, church, and nonprofit institutions to support children in these situations for 20 years. When I see that happening and all the poverty and help to the poor programs restored fully then I will say we are a Christian nation but until that point we are hypocrites and liars. The same as what the prophet Amos messaged.

barnababaruch — Just use a little common sense. You and I both have seen poor people going into the super market or drug store and buying all sorts of unnecessary stuff — Red Bull, Fritos, sodas, bottled water…. Now, don’t you think they could easily pick up a package of condoms?
This situation is about much deeper issues.
You think killing a child is better that having an “unwanted” child. I will stand on the Ten Commandments.
