Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate. – Dietrich Bonhoeffer, “The Cost of Discipleship” chapter 1

  1. We have a tendency to view grace as when we are being nice to someone. It can be that but it is much more than that. Grace is love and love is not always sweet. Sometimes grace is a passion so intense that you intervene in situations in unexpected ways. It is the teacher filling out numerous forms on a student to truly get them help even though it costs her much time and the derision of some colleagues who think an abused 9 year old boy is not worth it. It is letting someone go down a path not good for them after telling them the truth in love and loving them anyway despite their sin. It is helping or creating missions against all odds. It is silently praying intensely for those who outcast you and treat you unfairly. I think every time Jesus loved it took something out of him and he had to hope or pray someone or God himself would put something back in to replace it. Finally He had to give it all away. To me He died of a broken heart and a broken and contrite heart is what God needs to pour out grace from someone in life or death. The Cost of Discipleship chapter one is not on Google Books–it starts about Chapter 5. When I get some money above paying my bills then I will get it.Hope you do a few more quotes from Dietrich.
