Houstonites: I’m doing a series of lectures February 10-12, for any interested, on the topic, “Speaking Love’s Name: A Theology of Compassion.” The lectures will be at Salem Lutheran Church. Please feel free to invite your folks if you think there would be interest.

My thesis is that love is at the center of the theology of the Bible. It starts in the Shemah, Deuteronomy 6:4-5. Jesus picks it up when asked for the greatest commandment. Paul picks it up in 1 Corinthians 13. John picks it up in phrases like, “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John 4:7-8)

This love, however, is not sentiment. Beginning with the law and prophets, love of neighbor has a very specific content that is presented in the law, hammered in the prophets, and lived out in Jesus life and ministry.
