11But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood self-condemned; 12for until certain people came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But after they came, he drew back and kept himself separate for fear of the circumcision faction. 13And the other Jews joined him in this hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. Gal 2

Peter had become comfortable eating with Gentiles. He had done the Jesus thing and crossed over the social barrier, and come to understand the other. But when oters came, who had not learned to do this he drew back in fear… Of what? Criticism? His life? Judgment? Ostracism?

Perhaps this is the hardest part of crossing borders those we leave behind, who cannot make the journey with us. The challenge is loving them, without ceasing to love our newfound friends.

In time your grow to love the outcast and grow increasingly frustrated with the moral majority. You feel like the prodigal father outside the party trying to invite the indignant older son to come in.
